Avraham Holtz (z”l)

Professor Emeritus of Hebrew Literature

Avraham Holtz was born in New York City in 1934. He attended New York City public schools, including Stuyvesant High School, and afternoon Hebrew school at the East Side Hebrew Institute and the Herzliah Hebrew High School. In 1952 he was chosen to participate in the State of Israel鈥檚 first Program for Hebrew Teachers from Abroad, which later became the Hayyim Greenberg Institute. The following year he graduated from the Herzliah Hebrew Teachers Institute and received its Hebrew Teachers Diploma.

After receiving his B.A. in Ancient History from Brooklyn College in 1955, he was admitted to the Rabbinical School of the Jewish Theological Seminary, where he was the Cyrus Adler Scholar for 1958 1959. He was ordained and awarded the degree of M.H.L. in 1959 and while teaching in the Seminary College and its Prozdor High School program continued his studies for his D.H.L., which he received in 1962. At 91快播, he taught Hebrew Literature and language, liturgy, midrash, and Bible, and attained the rank of full professor as Simon H. Fabian Professor of Hebrew and Jewish Literature. He served as chairman of his department for several terms and as Dean for Academic Development under Chancellor Gerson D. Cohen. He was awarded the Hebrew University鈥檚 Lady Davis Research Fellowship (1969), and was also a Visiting Professor of Hebrew Language and Literature at Columbia University, Hunter College/CUNY, and at the Seminario Rabinico Latino-Americano in Buenos Aires, Argentina (1988), and was a Visiting Scholar at the Hebrew University (1989). He visited the USSR in 1972 as a participant in a special program to visit Soviet Jews. Avraham Holtz retired from 91快播 in 2004, and became Professor Emeritus, after 42 years of teaching.

Professor Holtz was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Grant for research related to the preparation of an annotated and illustrated edition of S.Y. Agnon鈥檚 Hebrew novel Hakhnasat Kallah (Dowering the Bride), the first volume in a series Mar鈥檕t uMeqorot (Sights and Sources), which appeared in 1995. This work also received the State of Israel Ministry of Education and Culture Prize as a subvention for its publication by Schocken Publishing House.  The second volume in the series, a similar edition of Agnon鈥檚 Hebrew novel T鈥檓ol Shilshom (Only Yesterday), now in preparation, has been awarded the same prize. In 1993, he received the Histadrut Ivrit鈥檚 Abraham Friedman Prize for Hebrew Culture in America. In 2013, Avraham Holtz was named an Honorary Member of the State of Israel鈥檚 Academy for the Hebrew Language. 

He has published many studies, scholarly articles, and reviews in Hebrew and in English .
