is the Robert S. Rifkind Chair in American Jewish history at the Jewish Theological Seminary.ÌýHer research interests include American Jewish history, the history of youth and childhood, Yiddish culture, and the history of sexuality. Her first book,ÌýÌý(Stanford University Press) addressed the experiences of youth in postwar Jewish summer camps and the place of intergenerational negotiation in the making of American Jewish culture. Her next book considers how changing conceptions of modern youth and childhood shaped American Jewish life. Sandra has published academic work inÌýJewish Social Studies,ÌýAmericanÌýJewishÌýHistory, and theÌýJournalÌýof the History of Childhood and Youth, and popular writing in theÌýNew York Times,ÌýSlate, andÌýHaaretz.
Previous to her joining 91¿ì²¥, Sandra was a visiting assistant professor of American Jewish History and director of the Archive of the American Jewish Left in the Digital Age at New York University. SheÌýreceived her doctorate from New York University’s joint History and Hebrew Judaic Studies program in 2018, followed by postdoctoral fellowships at Ben Gurion University and Stanford University. She is the founder and executive producer of the Yiddish-language podcastÌýand serves on the editorial board ofÌýIn geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies.
